Ecuador’s largest City (Population 2.16 million) and the country’s chief seaport, industrial and commercial centre lies on the West bank of Rio Guayas, some 56 km from its outflow into the Gulf of Guayaquil. Founded in 1535 by Sebastian Benalcazar the city couldn’t be more different from its highland counterpart and political rival, Quito. It’s hot, fast-paced, bold and brash providing a lively and colorful atmosphere at the Pacific coast.
Quito is the capital of Ecuador and with about 1.7 million inhabitants the second largest city of the country (Guayaquil is the largest). At about 2850 m above the sea level it has a spring-like climate. It is in a valley flanked by majestic mountains and, on a clear day, several snow-capped volcanoes are visible. As well as being in a beautiful location, it is rich in history and much of the old colonial town is well preserved. In 1978 UNESCO declared Quito’s colonial center a world cultural heritage site.
